Biography The Sin Committee
April 2009
These are busy times for the four guys of the Dutch progressive metal band The Sin Committee. From the first moment they started working on the songs of their new EP “Confess”, the band is, as the put it themselves ”going full throttle”. Vocalist Joris Bod: ”Already for some time we had the feeling that we had something really cool going on, but as long as you stay in the rehearsal room nothing happens. If you want to achieve something as an unknown band, you simply need to put in a lot of effort”. The Sin Committee, founded in 2006, did the recordings of its first release “Wormwood” (2007) by itself. For the new EP Confess, which was released on March 2009, the band decided to work with producer Erwin Hermsen (Mangled, Collision) of Toneshed Recording Studio. “We wanted a professional production this time and after a lot of searching we found Erwin. That worked out really great. Besides a professional sound he also came with all kinds of ideas during the recordings which we used to take the music to a higher level”, drummer Victor Smeets explains.
Although a good producer may take a band to the next level, you’ll obviously still need strong songs to start with. Guitarist Raymon van Vught: “We had a kick-ass feeling about the new material, but the real test is how you are rated by the magazines. As you can imagine, we were quite anxious when reading the first few reviews”. From the moment it became clear that Confess was received really well by both Dutch and international magazines, the band hit the roof. Bass player Willem Elbers: “It was really cool when we learned that other people like your music. We see the reviews as a confirmation that our current musical direction is the right one”. In this direction influences from various other bands can be heard, including Tool, Mastodon, Opeth and System of a Down. Characteristic for the songs on “Confess” are the non-standard song structures and dynamics between melodic parts with clean vocals and more brutal sections with grunting.
With lots of good reviews and a clear musical direction the band’s future certainly looks bright. So what’s next? “We’ve worked hard to get our stuff well arranged. Among other things we’ve put much energy into building a strong fan base so people come visit our gigs. Now it is time is there to start doing why we started with this band in the first place, and that is playing lots of shows”, guitarist Raymon smiles. The band already received positive acclaim for its live performances in the past, so they know how to give a good live show. Drummer Victor: “We are really committed to take the band to the next level. If it is up to us, people are going to hear a lot more of The Sin Committee in 2009”.
